Statutory Standards – Brake & Lane Change Testing

TFNSW Brake Testing Requirement – Brake Assessment Manual 3

Testing undertaken using the criteria taken from the Brake Assessment Manual in accordance with the modifications undertaken.

Type H

Spike stops and/or fatigue assessment — two test runs per test condition.

  • The vehicle is brought to a stop after momentary wheel lock as quickly as possible and without further locking of the wheels.
  • Brakes are to be less than 100°C before the test, with the front and rear brake temperatures within 5°C of each other.
  • Test speed: 55 km/h.

Type O

Engine disconnected — three test runs per test condition.

  • MFDD of at least 6.43 m/s² and brake pedal force of 65–500 N.
  • Test speeds of 80 km/h and 100 km/h, with stopping distances of 46.4 m and 70 m respectively.
  • Stabilisation at 60 km/h for 83.3 m before the test.
  • Stabilisation at 80 km/h for 111.1 m before the test.
  • Stabilisation at 100 km/h for 138.8 m before the test.

Type K

Heating procedure, engine disconnected — one test run per test condition.

  • Brake control is used to attain a mean deceleration of 3 m/s², repeated 15 times.
  • Brake pedal force is to attain a mean average of 3 m/s² on all tests.
  • Test from 80 km/h to 40 km/h, with 45 seconds between the start of each braking cycle.

Test L

Type-I hot performance, engine disconnected.

Based on ADR 31/01, Appendix A, Annex 3, Clause 1.5.2.

This test is intended to check brake performance when hot.

  • ADR vehicles in Modification Category 16 are tested at 100 km/h.
  • Vehicles in Modification Categories 17, 26 and 27 are tested at the lesser of 80% of their maximum speed or 100 km/h.

Test M

Type-I recovery procedure.

Based on ADR 31/01, Appendix A, Annex 3, Clause 1.5.3.

This test takes place immediately after Test L. The vehicle is stopped four times from 50 km/h with the engine connected, at a mean deceleration of 3 m/s².

Test N

Type-I recovery performance.

Based on ADR 31/01, Appendix A, Annex 3, Clause 1.5.4.

This test is intended to check brake performance when hot.

  • ADR vehicles in Modification Category 16 are tested at 100 km/h.
  • Vehicles in Modification Categories 17, 26 and 27 are tested at the lesser of 80% of their maximum speed or 100 km/h.
  • Vehicles in all other modification categories are tested at 80 km/h.
